‘Offensive’ Halloween costumes a no-go at Ontario university

Warning: your tasteless Halloween costume might not cross any legal boundaries but don’t expect a lot party invitations if you happen to attend Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont.

This year’s top tasteless and unwanted costumes include Bill Cosby, Caitlyn Jenner and any getups that depict rape or suicide, according to a list prohibiting these and other suits put out by the university’s student union.

The students association has gone so far as to put out a “Halloween Costume Vetting Protocol” that allows partygoers at the university to determine if their costume meets the union’s minimum standards:

Other schools like McGill University in Montreal have previously used a colour-coding system on costumes, with green getting the all clear, yellow suggesting the outfit is questionable and red letting everyone else know that the wearer’s costume has strayed into offensive territory.

Of course if you want to dress in a culturally-inappropriate outfit, pop up costume chain Spirit Halloween is intent on selling a full line of “native” costumes, many coming with headdresses and bows and arrows.
